Workshop 2019 – Organizers<\/p><\/div>\n

After successful meetings in July 2015<\/a> and May 2017<\/a>, the 3rd<\/sup> International Workshop on Spine Loading and Deformation<\/strong>, organized by Hendrik Schmidt, Saeed Shirazi-Adl, and Idsart Kingma, was held at the Julius Wolff Institute, Charit\u00e9 \u2013 Universit\u00e4tsmedizin Berlin on July 4-6, 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The workshop brought together nearly 100 participants from 16 countries<\/strong>. Researchers active in different disciplines presented 47 talks and 13 posters<\/strong>. The research topics covered trunk loads, postures and motions (imaging, sensors, and video camera), tissue mechanical tolerance, biological responses to mechanical load, failure and pain generation, measurements and model studies in sports, occupational and daily living tasks, with a focus on the lumbar and thoracic regions of spine.<\/p>\n

It has increasingly become evident that the key to further success in providing the most effective personalized care for patients suffering from spinal disorders lies in intensified cross communications and collaborations across disciplines; in other words as elegantly phrased by late Alf Nachemson, by inter-discipline migrations.<\/p>\n

A 3rd Special Issue of the Journal of Biomechanics<\/strong> including 32 original articles is now available online.<\/p>\n

The papers presented in this special issue cover vast areas of spine biomechanics; from the disc and motion segment sub-component levels to the trunk neuro-musculoskeletal level including passive and active tissues. These works encompass imaging, in vivo, in vitro and modeling techniques. A total of 4 review papers appear in this issue that deal with the role of genetics, physical exposure and posture in disc degeneration and LBP, load sharing in lumbar motion segments and spine kinematics in bipeds and quadrupeds during walking.<\/span><\/p>\n
